Building ones self image starts not just from the day your born, but before. From consciousness. They're unfolded and further enhanced when we arrive into our outside environments. Voices, words, images, touch... all these play a key role in our self building construct, shaping of our mind(s) and how we view the current world.
The main foundation starts from our every day routines, homes, families. The same faces, voices, smells forms our inevitable 'self image'.
Lets narrow this down to one of the most vital and essential part of our self image make up, our hair. Research as scientifically proven the connection between hair and ones self confidence can and does improve ones ability to have a positive outlook through out their lives.
Genetically we are all born with set features, distinctions , attributes, down to the differences in textures of hair that makes us who we are as individuals, but depending on the social environment some may feel as though they may stand out more so than others. If you are placed in a environment where the number of those who's features and hair textures out number yours. This can and does effect the view of ones self, questions; curiosity may arise not only from that individual, but also those surrounding them.
Coiled textured hair, also known as Afro- textured hair is a texture of hair that is not only beautiful , but complex in both sight and perspective. While the complexity can range from defying gravity, massive shrinkage deception, to detailed intricate geometrical patterns. it is a sight to behold.
Along the way societal views can impair our self image, certain groups of individuals are effected more so than others. In many ways that may be too in depth and historical for one blog to dive in to. From social media, television, to simply walking into a mall we are endowed with images of others; which can and does significantly impact how we see our selves.
For eras coiled textured hair as been misunderstood, and placed in many unfortunate categories of conformity. Though we've come a long way from our past events, we still have quite a way to go, and with each break through another door is revealed and opened. By allowing ourselves to be open to expand on our current forms of knowledge; no matter the status, ethnicity, demographic... it can and will lead to a greater inclusive community.
Inclusion looks different for every one and not everyone as access to a healthy home or foundation to start. This is where institutions, public spaces and larger influential community business structures, can play a key part in assisting those needs. Opening up the doors to allowing them selves to more education on subjects and areas that may have never been introduced to the public sector, filling gaps. solving problem and building a stronger community.
Our foundations start with safe spaces, family homes, place of comfort, and a place of knowing who you are. Starting here offers us the ability to remember no matter what the world may try to falsely tell you , you will know how to always find your way back to who you know you are.
Communication and humility is a major part in building any infrastructure. By better understanding each other, shared cultural stories, listening. It can and will advance us into more collaborative innovations. At the end of the day we all need each other and it truly starts in where ever we may call home.
